A Hollywood legend

The VW Bug has been a part of movie culture for many years, making cameos in films such as Fight Club, The Big Lebowski, Footloose, and The Shining. However, the VW Bug is probably best known for its signature role in 1968’s Herbie the Love Bug.

From Germany to Modern America

The Volkswagen Beetle has a rich history that spans almost a century.
In the 1930s, Germany announced its intentions of mass-producing an economy family car that could carry two adults and three children at a speed of 60 mph and would cost only 1000 Reichmarks—a true “People’s Car” (“Volkswagen” in German).

They set this challenge before Ferdinand Porsche, who then introduced the Volkswagen Type 1 in 1938. That very same year, The New York Times was the first to refer to the Type 1 by the “Beetle” moniker, referring to its shape.

The Beetle became popular in the United States in the years following World War II, and by 1955, Volkswagen was selling more vehicles abroad than at home.

The low price and convenience of the Beetle appealed to many Americans, making it an extremely popular seller by the 1960s. Permanently entwined in the peace and love counterculture of the “hippie movement,” the Volkswagen Beetle and the Volkswagen bus were staples at Woodstock.

The car became a larger part of American pop culture with Disney’s The Love Bug, which started as a series of movies in 1968 and expanded into a TV series.

Though popular, the Volkswagen Beetle faced increased competition from Japanese small-car models like Honda and Nissan, which led to diminishing sales.

Volkswagen terminated Beetle sales in the United States in 1980.
